Shand Cup/Sybil Green

The annual quadrangular between Hawkes Bay, Manawatu/Wanganui, Wellington & Taranaki took place at Te Ngutu Golf Club in Taranaki in mid October.

Both teams were looking to bring some young players into their respective teams with an eye to the future.

The Shand Cup team was the following players:

Doug Holloway, Tyson Tawera, Dean Gray, Cordell Henare, Saul Barker, Reuben Harris, Luke Jarvis & George Pogson.

The team had a hard fought 4-4 draw with Manawatu/Wanganui. A loss to Taranaki 5.5-2.5 and a final loss to Wellington 7-1. It was a great weekend get some experience for some of the younger players.

The Women’s team were looking to back up their win from last year.

The Sybil Green team was the following players:

Kayla Van De Ven, Tessa McDonald, Ruby Jarvis, Devon Henare, Clare Choi, Martha Manaena, Irina Vlasov & Miller Henare.

The team had a narrow victory against Manawatu/Wanganui 4.5-3.5 to also win the Judy Pearson Salver which is also on the line against Manawatu/Wanganui. The team followed this up with a 5.5-2.5 win against Taranaki meaning they would need a win against Wellington to retain the trophy. After a very hard fought battle the team managed to get the win 4.5-3.5 meaning that the girls would take home bother trophies again for 2024. It was a fantastic result for the team with a mixture of senior players and quite a few young players which bodes well for the future.
