Greenwood Cup Weekend #1
The Greenwood Cup 2020 Rounds 1-3 were hosted over the weekend at Dannevirke Golf Club.
Considering the weather earlier in the week and snow on the mountains the players were greeted with calm and good weather for the weekend. With the golf course in superb condition Saturday saw the teams play 36 holes with some great 1st up matches to start the tournament.
Defending champions Hastings started their defense against a strong Napier team. With some very hard fought matches Hastings came out victors 6.5-3.5. Hawkes Bay’s first game was against Central HB with most of the matches coming right down the wire Hawkes Bay were still able to come away with 9-1 victory. The hosts Dannevirke started their campaign against Maraenui. After a tight fought battle Maraenui came away with a 5.5-4.5 win. Onga Onga and Karamu were the 4th match of the morning with Onga Onga coming away with a convincing 9-1 victory.
Round 2 on Saturday afternoon saw the 1st round winners looking to stay unbeaten for day 1. Hawkes Bay came up against Karamu and continued their good form with another convincing 9-1 win. Hastings took on the hosts Dannevirke with it being a tough battle but Hastings just proved too strong with a 7-3 win. Onga Onga looked to stay undefeated against Central HB. They did so with a convincing 9.5-1.5 victory. Maraenui took on Napier to finish the rounds matches. With half the matches going deep into back nine it was close till the end with Napier able to come away with a crucial 7.5-2.5 win. This meant after day one there were 3 undefeated teams of Hastings, Onga Onga & Hawkes Bay all looking to finish the weekend undefeated on Sunday.
Sunday bought beautiful skies with a slight frost delaying play due to frost in the morning. With only 1 round on Sunday it was crucial for teams to either keep themselves in the mix or solidify their positions atop the leaderboard.
Maraenui took on Central HB looking to keep in touch with the leaders and did so with a 6-4 win. Onga Onga had a crucial battle against Napier with Napier looking to keep in touch with the leaders and Onga Onga looking to go undefeated all weekend. After a tense battle Napier came away winners 5.5-4.5 to stay right in the mix. Hawkes Bay continued their blistering form with a 6.5-3.5 win against hosts Dannevirke to stay undefeated for the weekend. Hastings were also seeking to stay undefeated taking on Karamu to finish the weekend. Keeping their defense on track with a solid 8.5-1.5 win.
This means at the end of the first weekend we see the two teams of Hawkes Bay & Hastings undefeated and three teams hot on their heals with Napier, Maraenui & Onga Onga all one win behind.
This sees the tournament move to Maraenui Golf Club for the final weekend on Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th November with 4 matches still to play it is still any teams game.
