Shand Cup/Sybil Green Salver

The 1st District Representative competition for Hawke’s Bay saw our Men’s, Women’s and Men’s Masters teams venture over to Te Ngutu Golf Club in Taranaki for the annual Shand Cup/Sybil Green competition last weekend.

The teams were greeted with some windy conditions over the weekend making it tough going for all.

Our Women’s Team had a good weekend with a mixture of results with a loss 5-3 against Wellington on Saturday morning and a 5-3 loss again in the afternoon against Wellington. Sunday saw them come up against hosts Taranaki with a 4-4 draw with 4 matches ended all square and 2 each going to both teams. With 2 tight loses and the draw it saw our Women come home in 4th place.

The Men’s Masters team had a tough start to the weekend with a 5.5-.5 loss to Manawatu-Wanganui on Saturday morning. In the afternoon the team came back with a 3-3 draw against Wellington. The team had a strong finish on Sunday morning beating Taranaki 3.5-2.5 to have a tally of a half, a loss and a win for the weekend. This saw the team settle for 3rd place.

The Men’s team started on Saturday morning against Manawatu/Wanganui with an interesting 4-4 draw with the top half having losses and the bottom half having wins. Saturday afternoon saw them face Wellington coming away with a narrow 4.5-3.5 loss. Sunday saw them come up against hosts Taranaki looking to finish on a high note for the weekend. After a hard fought morning the team came away with a 5-3 win to finish the weekend in a solid 2nd place.

Congratulations to Wellington who came away with a clean sweep of the Sybil Green Salver, The Shand Cup and the Stu Smith Memorial Trophy for the second year in a row.

It was great to see the teams all get a some match play in after covid-19 put all other provincial matches on the back burner. Next up for the Men is the Greenwood Cup this coming weekend with almost all of the players representing their respective clubs in the Pinnacle Men’s Club event of the Hawke’s Bay season. This will be more great match play practice for the NZ Interprovincial’s just around the corner in November. Next up for the Women’s Team is the Women’s Interprovincial’s at the beginning of December.
