The Men’s Masters team travelled to Poverty Bay over the weekend of Saturday 21nd & Sunday 22rd of July for a quadrangular tournament looking to get their representative season underway at Poverty Bay Golf Club. This is the same venue that the Freyberg Masters is being played at later in the year so a great first look at the course for the team.

The weekend saw the team play against Poverty Bay’s Masters Men & Senior team as well as Wellingtons Masters Men’s team over the 2 days.

The players competing were: Doug Holloway, Mike Trass, Jared McGillicuddy, Richard Ratima, Mike Harvey-Fitzgerald, Brett Harris, Nick Radonich & Pete Saunders.

Saturday morning dawned a nice day after torrential rain all day Friday for the first match against PB Masters.  The course was in amazing condition considering the weather this area has had recently.  It was the first look at the course for some players and HB Masters came out the victors with a 7.5-0.5 win.

Saturday afternoon we came up against a strong Wellington Masters team who have won the last 2 Freyberg events.  Wellington ultimately proved too strong and closed with a 6-2 victory.

The last match on Sunday morning was against the PB Toro team and the HB Masters team had another good 7-1 win.

Everyone had at least one win and 2 players went unbeaten with Mike Harvey-Fitzgerald going 3 for 3 and Brett Harris having 2 wins and a half.

Excellent preparation was had for the upcoming representative season.

Wellington were the overall winners with 3 match wins and 17.5 game wins.  HB Masters were second with 2 match wins and 16.5 game wins.

It was a great first representative hit out for the team with the next fixture the Stu Smith Memorial in late September.
