Junior Girls & Boys
Junior’s Tee it up against Manawatu/Wanganui.
A team of 15 Juniors, nine boys and six girls challenged their Regional neighbors to a matchplay hit out on the 20th August at the Dannevirke Golf Course.
The course was a new experience for most of them, hence the reason for playing there, as well as being a convenient day trip for both Regions to meet in the middle.
Both Regions are passionate about giving their Juniors the opportunity to grow and improve their game, by holding more of these events. It improves their course management, and they get to measure themselves against other kids from different areas, plus make new golfing friends.
The Hawkes Bay girls playing were Ruby Jarvis, Miller Henare, Kayla Van De Ven, Verity Adsett, Niamh McGillicuddy, and Devon Henare. They played well and were skillful enough to have an overall win. They played on handicap, giving shots and in some games they gave over 20 shots.
It was great to see the sportsmanship of our girls and the way that they helped the opposition out with scoring, matchplay rules, and general knowledge of the game. Some of the Manawatu/Wanganui girls were very new to the game. Well done girls.
There was some great matches among the boys, who played matchplay off the stick.
The boys team consisted of Cordell Henare, Rueben Harris, Saul Barker, Blair Hastie, Ollie Derbie, Leo Dixon, Luke Jarvis, Arthur Sharpe, Leo Huata,
Cordell was 4 down at the turn, he played well to work his way back to loose one down on the eighteenth. Saul played consistently through both the nines to halve his match. Unfortunately the boys overall lost to Manawatu/Wanganui but put on a good display of golfing skills and sportsmanship. The Hawkes Bay boys will be looking forward to a rematch with a very different outcome.
