Greenwood Cup Final Weekend

The Final Weekend of the Greenwood for 2020 took place last weekend at Maraenui Golf Club.

After the substantial amount of rain that saw flooding in around the golf course earlier in the week the players were greeted by dry fairways and beautiful sunshine on Saturday morning.

After weekend 1 Hastings and Hawkes Bay were seeking to stay undefeated which would see either team claim the trophy for 2020.

The wind was up on Saturday making it a challenge for the players. In round 4 on Saturday morning it saw Hawkes Bay with a crucial 1st up challenge against Napier. Napier came away with a narrow victory 5.5-4.5 to end Hawkes Bay’s unbeaten streak and put Napier right back in the mix for the trophy. Hastings played Central HB and came away with a solid 7.5-2.5 victory staying undefeated. Maraenui seeking to stay up with the leaders defeated Karamu 9.5-1.5. In a crucial battle for the Radonich Salver Dannevirke beat Onga Onga 6.5-3.5.

Round 5 in the afternoon saw the wind still hang around making a tough day for all the players. It saw some crucial matches take place with hosts Maraenui taking on Hawkes Bay and Hastings taking on Onga Onga. Hawkes Bay came through with a narrow 5.5-4.5 against Maraenui. Meanwhile Hastings continued their unbeaten run with a 6.5-3.5 win over Onga Onga. Dannevirke continued their strong form with a 7-3 victory over Central HB and Napier continued to put the pressure on Hastings with a 9-1 win over Karamu.

This saw Hastings sitting atop the table undefeated however some crucial games on Sunday could see any of 4 teams come away with the trophy for 2020.

Sunday saw the wind disappear and beautiful sunshine greet the players for the final day of the Greenwood Cup for 2020.

Round 6 in the morning saw some must win matchups with Hastings seeking to stay undefeated and Maraenui, Napier and Hawkes Bay all seeking to keep winning to make it come down to the last round. Hastings had their neighbors Hawkes Bay up 1st seeking to stay undefeated. Hastings came away with a crucial 7-3 win. Napier continued to win and keep the pressure Hastings with a 8-2 victory over Central HB. Maraenui won against Onga Onga 7-3 but it would not be good enough to stay in the mix. Dannevirke went 3/3 with a 7.5-2.5 win over Karamu meaning the Radonich Salver is still up for grabs since Onga Onga lost.

As has happened in the last 3 years it all came down to the last round on Sunday afternoon. After the scores were tallied after round 6 it was a 2 horse race. It saw Hastings sitting undefeated and Napier 1 win behind. Hastings would take on tough hosts Maraenui knowing a win or a draw would be good enough. Napier had to beat Dannevirke who have been in stellar form all weekend and win well and hope Hastings lost for it to force a countback. Hawkes Bay sealed the Radonich Salver for 2020 with their 5.5-4.5 win over Onga Onga giving Dannevirke the Salver for 2020. Central HB had a good last up battle vs Karamu coming away 6.5-3.5 winners. Napier did the job of beating Dannevirke but was 6-4 going to be good enough. Hastings had the tough job of beating the hosts Maraenui and their unbeaten run came to an end in the last round losing 6-4.

This meant that as Hastings and Napier were even on points it came to a countback for the 3rd year in a row. Hastings managed to win enough games over the 7 rounds to come away with the win by the narrowest of margins of 2 games.

The Bretherton Buist Trophy which goes to the highest seeded player with the most wins over the 7 rounds came down to the last round with Jeff Tuoro & Kaleb Tawera both seeking to go undefeated. Jeff came away with a narrow loss in the afternoon and Kaleb came away with a solid win to claim the trophy for 2020.
