2021 Shand Cup/Sybil Green/Stu Smith Memorial
The annual Quadrangular tournament took place on Saturday 30th October & Sunday 31st October. This saw our Men’s, Women’s and Men’s Masters teams play against Wellington, Taranaki & Manawatu/Wanganui for the Shand Cup, Sybil Green Salver & Stu Smith Memorial Trophies.
The Men’s Team came up against Manawatu/Wanganui first up on Saturday morning looking to get off to a winning start to the weekend. After some close fought matches the team came away with a solid 5.5-2.5 win to start the weekend. The afternoon saw them play against Taranaki looking to keep their winning form going. It was much tighter in the afternoon with the team narrowly winning 4.5-3.5 to sit 2-0 after day 1.
Sunday Morning saw the team against Wellington with both teams sitting undefeated. A win or tie would have been good enough to win the Shand Cup for 2021. It was a very tight battle with multiple matches coming down to the last few holes. Wellington came away victorious by the narrowest of margins 4.5-3.5 to claim the trophy for 2021. A solid 2nd place finish for the team just behind Wellington by the slimmest of margins.
The Women’s Team got their weekend underway on Saturday Morning against a strong Wellington team. After some tight matches Wellington proved too strong winning 6.5-1.5. The afternoon saw the Women against Taranaki. Again after some tight matches Taranaki managed to come away victorious 6.0-2.0.
Sunday morning saw the Women finish their weekend against Manawatu/Wanganui. With some very tight battles Manawatu/Wanganui managed to sneak the victory 4.5-3.5.
The Men’s Masters team came up against Manawatu/Wanganui to start off on Saturday morning. After a hard fought morning Manawatu/Wanganui narrowly won 3.5-2.5. The afternoon saw the team play a tough Wellington team who prove too strong to win 4.0-2.0
Sunday morning saw the team finish up against Taranaki. The came away with a 4-2 win to finish the weekend with 1 win and 2 losses.
The weekend proved to be a great hit out for the teams with the national fixtures just around the corner. The Men’s Masters team travels to Paraparaumu Golf Club for the Freyberg Masters starting Monday 8th November. The Men’s team travels to Ashburton Golf Club starting 30th November and The Women’s team travels to Timaru Golf Club starting 7th December.
It was great to see competitive golf back with many tournaments being postponed/cancelled due to Covid-19.
